Green Falcons Secure Double Win Against Ghana

Nigeria’s women’s rugby league team, the Green Falcons, outclassed Ghana’s Leopardess once again with a commanding 24–8 win on Saturday at the Alaro City International Rugby Pitch in Lekki, Lagos. The victory sealed their dominance in the two-match friendly series, having crushed Ghana earlier in the week.

After suffering a heavy defeat in the first game, the Ghanaians came into the second leg with greater determination and managed to keep the game tighter. Still, Nigeria wasted no time asserting control, scoring two early tries to take a comfortable lead by halftime.

Ghana fought back with more energy in the second half, narrowing the margin and testing Nigeria’s defense. The tension on the field rose, as the physical exchanges between both sides intensified. But the Green Falcons kept their composure, and Faustina Akeje’s decisive try reignited their momentum before another late effort sealed the result at 24–8.

For the Nigerian camp, the back-to-back victories were not just about bragging rights but about refining their gameplay ahead of a much bigger challenge—the World Series in Canada. The team’s management described the friendlies as valuable tests that highlighted where the squad still needs to improve before facing tougher opponents on the world stage.

Nigeria Rugby League Association chairman, Abiodun Cole, praised the team’s progress and unity, noting that their preparation has been strengthened by strong backing from local sponsors, ex-players, and supporters both home and abroad. He emphasized that the blend of homegrown talent and foreign-based stars gives the Green Falcons a competitive edge going into the international tournament.

With confidence running high, the Green Falcons now turn their attention to Canada, where they will face Ireland, Fiji, and the hosts in the inaugural Rugby League World Series. The tournament will determine which team earns the final qualification spot for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
