Man Steals N290K on Ibom Air

A tense situation unfolded on an Ibom Airr flight on Wednesday morning when a male passenger was apprehended by Aviation Security officers for allegedly stealing N290,000 from a foreign national’s luggage. The incident occurred just before the aircraft was scheduled to depart from Lagos to Abuja, causing a disturbance that required immediate security intervention.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident took place around 7:00 a.m. during the final stages of boarding. The foreign passenger reportedly discovered that a sum of N290,000 in cash was missing from his bag, which he had placed in the overhead compartment. He immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of both the cabin crew and other passengers.

The cabin crew swiftly responded and initiated an investigation into the matter. A fellow passenger claimed to have seen a man handling the foreigner’s bag shortly before the money was reported missing. The suspect, however, denied any involvement in the theft, leading to increased tension onboard.

Security personnel intervened to manage the situation, and the suspect was subsequently removed from the flight and taken into custody. Initially, a search of the suspect’s hand luggage did not reveal the missing cash, further complicating the situation.

However, following a suggestion from another observant passenger, a more thorough body search was conducted. This search uncovered part of the missing money hidden inside the suspect’s socks, while the rest was found concealed under his seat. The discovery confirmed the suspicion of theft and provided concrete evidence against the suspect.

An airport staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization to discuss the case, described how the money was found during the body search, which helped resolve the mystery behind the missing cash.

Ibom Air’s spokesperson, Annie Essienette, confirmed the incident when contacted on Thursday. She acknowledged the quick and effective response by the crew and security operatives, which helped restore calm on board the aircraft. Essienette added that the suspect had been handed over to the police for further action.

Interestingly, despite the evidence against the suspect, the foreign victim reportedly expressed disinterest in pressing charges. As a result, there is a possibility that the suspect may be released without formal prosecution.

“This incident is true, and the timely intervention of both the crew and security personnel helped to restore calm immediately. The suspect was handed over to the police, but since the victim is not pursuing charges, the suspect may be released,” Essienette said.

This event highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt response by airline staff and security personnel to maintain safety and order on flights. It also underscores the challenges faced by passengers and airlines in safeguarding belongings during air travel. The incident serves as a reminder for travelers to stay alert and report suspicious activities promptly to prevent theft and ensure a secure flying experience.
