Abuja Welcomes Top Basketball Stars This Weekend

Abuja will become the stage for the Crown Elite Basketball All-Star Weekend from August 22 to 24, uniting some of West Africa’s strongest basketball teams. Expected competitors at the Mo Arena Sports Hall include Nile University, champions of the Nigeria University Games, and the powerhouse Gboko City Chiefs.

This three-day sporting carnival represents Crown Elite Sports’ first appearance in Abuja after more than twelve years of organising events in other locations. The gathering is set to attract leading players from across Africa in what the organisers guarantee will be a memorable spectacle.

“We are truly excited to bring the Crown Elite All-Star event to Nigeria’s vibrant capital city, Abuja. This edition promises to be thrilling, as it not only celebrates the heart of basketball in our nation but also emphasises the importance of education among athletes,” said Hanson Oguche, president of Crown Elite Sports and founder of the organisation.

Activities will open on August 22 with warm-up encounters featuring six participating sides, such as Mo Heat Basketball Club, Royal Aces Basketball Club, and Air Warriors Basketball Club. The Hotcoal Basketball Foundation is backing the event as a principal sponsor.

The highlight on August 23 will be the All-Star showdowns, where the Sahel Conference Co-Ed Select squad, guided by Nile University’s Hamza Abubakar, will battle the Oceanic Conference team, managed by 2024 NBA BAL Coach of the Year Ogoh Odaudu, who also leads Rivers Hoopers and the Nigerian national side.

That same evening, spectators will witness a legends contest pitting ABU Kings Alumni against a Veterans Select Team from beyond Nigeria.

Dr. Ubong Udo, founder of the Hotcoal Basketball Foundation, voiced his joy at working with Crown Elite Sports to uplift and showcase athletes.

The weekend will round off on August 24 with an invitation-only Awards Night, celebrating standout players, coaches, officials, and contributors to Nigerian basketball.

Crowd-pleasing extras such as slam dunk battles and three-point shootouts will further elevate the excitement, strengthening the event’s mission to emerge as Africa’s premier basketball platform.
