Minister Lauds Northern Housing Scheme

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has announced significant strides made under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme in Northern Nigeria, describing the initiative as a catalyst for social transformation, economic growth, and community renewal.

In a statement highlighting the programme’s achievements under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Dangiwa stressed that the housing drive is not only about constructing buildings but also about rebuilding lives, restoring dignity, and fostering long-term security and prosperity in the North.

He explained that the Ministry is implementing a three-tier housing development strategy, which is already yielding visible results across the region. Central to this effort is the Renewed Hope City Projects, which comprise 4,612 housing units under development. This includes 3,112 units in Karsana, Federal Capital Territory, and an additional 1,500-unit Renewed Hope City alongside a 500-unit estate in Kano.

Furthermore, the Renewed Hope Estate Projects have successfully delivered 250 housing units each in Katsina, Gombe, Yobe, Sokoto, Benue, and Nasarawa, totaling 1,500 completed homes. All project sites, the Minister noted, have been equipped with modern infrastructure, including road networks, water supply systems, solar-powered lighting, and essential social amenities, ensuring that the estates are not just functional but also sustainable and community-friendly.

Dangiwa also outlined future plans under the Renewed Hope Social Housing Estates, an ambitious national scheme aimed at delivering 100 affordable housing units in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. This initiative, he said, is designed to expand access to homeownership and provide shelter for low- and middle-income families across the country.

Beyond housing delivery, the Minister emphasized the programme’s economic impact, revealing that it has created over 152,000 direct and indirect jobs in Northern Nigeria. These employment opportunities, particularly for young people and skilled artisans, have contributed to household income stability and boosted local economies. “Many artisans now earn up to ₦150,000 monthly, which in turn stimulates community-level economic activity,” he said.

To further promote affordability and long-term sustainability, the Ministry is investing in the establishment of building materials manufacturing hubs across all regions of Nigeria. This move is expected to reduce construction costs, encourage local production, and create additional employment opportunities while strengthening the domestic manufacturing sector.

In addition to its economic and infrastructural components, the Renewed Hope Housing Programme also addresses humanitarian needs through its Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict. Dangiwa described this as a crucial aspect of the government’s post-conflict recovery strategy, aimed at providing safe, dignified, and permanent housing for displaced persons and communities affected by insecurity.

The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to leveraging housing development as a tool for nation-building, social stability, and inclusive economic growth. He said the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development will continue to work with state governments, private investors, and development partners to expand the reach and impact of the programme in Northern Nigeria and beyond.
