Police Arraign Abuja Lawyer Victor Giwa for Forgery, Impersonation

The Nigeria Police Force has arraigned Abuja-based lawyer Victor Giwa before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Apo over allegations of forgery and impersonation in connection with a forged legal document allegedly intended to deceive the Attorney General of the Federation.

Giwa and his co-defendant, Bukola, are being prosecuted under a three-count charge marked CR/150/25, filed by the office of the Inspector General of Police. According to the charge, the defendants conspired to forge a letter on the official letterhead of the chambers of Chief Awa Kalu (SAN), falsely appealing to the AGF to halt Giwa’s arraignment in a separate criminal matter.

The forged document, dated June 28, 2024, was titled “Urgent and Solemn Appeal to Suspend the Arraignment of Our Colleague Victor Giwa on Charge Number: CR/222/2023.” It was allegedly addressed to the AGF and claimed to be from Awa Kalu’s chambers. The letter urged that the charges against Giwa be dropped in the interest of fairness and justice.

Giwa, along with property developer Cecil Osakwe and others, was previously scheduled to appear before the court on a nine-count charge bordering on criminal intimidation, illegal eviction, threat to life, and destruction of property worth N300 million.

The police are charging Giwa and Bukola with conspiracy, forgery, impersonation, and the dishonest execution of a document—all offences under various sections of the Penal Code, including Sections 97, 364, and 179.

When the case came up on Monday before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie, the proceedings were stalled as both defendants were absent. Defense counsel U.J. Udo informed the court that Giwa was attending his sister’s burial and requested an adjournment.

Prosecution counsel J.K. Kolawole, appearing on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, did not object. Justice Onwuegbuzie granted the adjournment but cautioned that no further excuses would be entertained. The case was adjourned until September 15, 2025, for arraignment.
