The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Command, confirmed the death of one officer in a tragic single-vehicle crash that occurred on Sunday. The crash involved a vehicle from the state Joint Task Force, “Operation Crush,” at Isieke, along the Umuahia-Bende Road.

In response, Governor Otti expressed his condolences for the lost officer and announced that the state government has taken responsibility for the medical treatment of the eight survivors, which includes personnel from the army, police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

According to a statement from the FRSC Abia State Command, issued by Corps Commander Ngozi Ezeoma, the crash resulted in injuries to eight officers, with varying degrees of severity. The incident has been attributed to a brake failure.

Ezeoma explained, “The crash occurred on Sunday night at Isieke junction along the Umuahia-Bende Road, when the vehicle swerved off the road and fell into a ditch due to brake failure. By the time FRSC arrived, the injured were already taken to the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, by the police for treatment. The survivors are receiving care at the medical center, and the deceased has been taken to the morgue.”

She also urged motorists to avoid speeding and emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance, particularly brake checks, before embarking on any journey.

Governor Otti, who extended his condolences to the leadership of the State Joint Security Command and the family of the deceased officer, described the incident as “tragic and unfortunate.” He expressed deep regret over the loss of life.

Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, issued a statement on Monday stating that Governor Otti assured that the state government would provide the best medical care to the injured officers, ensuring their swift recovery.
