Lydia Simon, another one of the Chibok girls, has been rescued by troops operating under Operation Desert Sanity III, North East Operation Hadin Kai. She, alongside her three children, was liberated by the troops of 82 Division Task Force Battalion in Ngoza LGA on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

According to intelligence sources briefed by Zagazola Makama, a Counter Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region, Lydia, who was identified as serial number 68 among the abducted missing girls, managed to escape from the camp of Ali Ngulde in MandaraMountain, where she had been held in captivity for several years. She surrendered to the troops of 82 Division Task Force Battalion at Ngoshe in GwozaLGA. At the time of her rescue, Lydia was five months pregnant and claimed she hailed from Pemi Town in Chibok.

April 14 marked the solemn commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the violent abduction of 276 girls from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram insurgents. While 57 of the girls managed to escape from their captors in the days following the abduction, 16 were later rescued, and 107 have been released at different times through negotiations.

The Federal government, state authorities, and the Nigerian Army have reiterated their unwavering commitment to rescuing the remaining abducted girls who are still being held in captivity by the terrorists. Despite a decade having passed since the horrific incident, efforts to locate and liberate these girls continue unabated, accentuating the collective determination to bring them back to safety and reunite them with their families.
