Amas Obasogie, an uncapped Nigerian goalkeeper, has voiced his aspiration to follow in the footsteps of Stanley Nwabali, praising the Chippa United shot-stopper for his remarkable rise to prominence.
Nwabali gained widespread recognition across Africa during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a crucial role in Nigeria’s journey to the final.
The Super Eagles’ number one goalkeeper featured in all seven matches of the tournament, securing four clean sheets. One of his standout moments came in the semi-finals against South Africa, where he saved two penalties to help Nigeria advance.
Since earning his first cap in 2021, Nwabali has made 17 international appearances for Nigeria. His inspiring climb to the top has served as motivation for Obasogie, who is eager to make his mark on the national team.
Obasogie received his first call-up under newly appointed head coach Éric Sékou Chelle, making the final 23-man squad for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Speaking to TheCable, he expressed his admiration for Nwabali’s journey.
“I respect the work Stanley Nwabali has put in to claim the Super Eagles’ number one spot,” Obasogie stated. “He first proved himself in the NPFL before excelling at Chippa United.”
“Being part of this team is a massive opportunity for me. Training with experienced players enhances my growth, and I approach every session with the mindset of a Super Eagles goalkeeper. If I get the chance to play, I will give it my all.”
Obasogie is one of four new players named in Chelle’s first squad, joining Tolu Arokodare, Papa Daniel Mustapha, and Igoh Ogbu. Another goalkeeper, Kayode Bankole, has also been invited to the national team for the first time.
Ahead of the squad announcement, Chelle was reportedly concerned about Nwabali’s mental state following the recent loss of both his parents. However, the goalkeeper has since put any doubts to rest, arriving in Nigeria’s training camp in Kigali on Monday evening in preparation for the World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
Currently sitting fifth in Group C, the Super Eagles will take on group leaders Rwanda in Kigali on Friday, March 21, before facing Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on March 25.
