Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has expressed his belief that Anthony Joshua is a superior boxer compared to Daniel Dubois, despite Joshua’s recent fifth-round knockout loss to Dubois.
In an interview with TNT Sports, the Ukrainian champion—who has claimed victories over both British fighters—was asked to compare the two. Usyk emphasized Joshua’s credentials, stating, “Anthony Joshua is an Olympic gold medalist and a two-time world champion. Daniel is still young, right? But Anthony remains the better boxer.”
In a separate discussion, Usyk expanded on his view, explaining that the two fighters should not be measured against each other. “They are completely different kinds of athletes. The only thing they share is that they are both boxers,” he said.
Usyk’s Firsthand Experience Against Joshua and Dubois
Having faced both men in the ring, Usyk’s opinion holds significant weight. He secured back-to-back wins over Joshua in 2021 and 2022, claiming and then successfully defending his heavyweight titles. In August 2023, he knocked out Dubois in his first title defense, though the fight was marked by controversy when Usyk was floored by a punch deemed illegal.
Following that fight, Joshua stepped into the ring against Dubois for the IBF belt. However, the former champion suffered a surprising fifth-round knockout loss, a performance many analysts described as underwhelming.
The Future of Joshua and Dubois
Since their encounter, neither Joshua nor Dubois has returned to the ring. A rematch was initially considered but ultimately fell apart, reportedly due to minor injuries on Joshua’s side. Meanwhile, Dubois was set to face Joseph Parker in February but pulled out due to illness.
Dubois has since expressed his desire for a second fight against Usyk, but the Ukrainian has been mandated to defend his WBO title against Parker instead.
Meanwhile, Joshua’s next move is becoming clearer. According to his promoter Eddie Hearn, the former world champion has narrowed his focus to just two possible opponents.
“Anthony is only interested in two fights: one against Tyson Fury and the other a rematch with Daniel Dubois,” Hearn told BoxingScene.
Hearn went on to express his ideal scenario: “In my perfect world, Fury would return to action soon, ideally within the next few months. That would pave the way for a fight with Joshua later this year. But as you know, nothing is ever guaranteed in boxing. Still, that is the biggest fight we can make.”
