Telecommunications behemoth MTN has closed all its stores and service centers throughout Nigeria in response to a wave of outrage from its subscribers. This action follows the network provider’s decision to suspend service for many users on Sunday, which ignited widespread discontent among its customer base.
A viral video circulating on social media on Monday captures the intensity of the situation, depicting a mob dismantling a barricade fence outside an MTN office. The footage reveals a sizable group of frustrated subscribers vandalising the company’s office in FESTAC Town, Lagos State. This unrest was triggered by MTN’s suspension of services due to discrepancies between subscribers’ National Identification Numbers and their SIM registration details.
In response to the circulated video on X.com, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, clarified that the District Police Officer (DPO) of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order and tranquility at the scene.
“Such actions are not the appropriate course of action!” MTN responded on Tuesday, announcing its decision to close all its shops nationwide that day.
“Dear Yello customer, please be informed that all our shops nationwide will be closed today, July 30, 2024,” the statement posted on X read.
